Why is the dress uniform of sailors white? Uniform of the Russian Navy: requirements and purpose of clothing

All types of troops Russian Federation have their own form of clothing. This makes it possible to determine the affiliation of military personnel to certain formations, serves as a source of pride for soldiers and officers. The navy was no exception. The sailors' uniforms have their own interesting story, which we propose to familiarize yourself with in more detail.

History of creation

The marine form owes its appearance to Peter the Great. This tsar is the creator of the Russian fleet, and it was at his command that a uniform uniform was introduced for sailors and junior officers. The first uniform was completely copied from the Dutch sailors, and consisted of the following elements:

  • Wide-brimmed hat;
  • Short pants in khaki;
  • Leather shoes;
  • Stockings;
  • Coarse wool jacket.

A little later, another form of clothing was approved: a cocked hat, a camisole, a loose-fitting shirt and canvas pants. It is noteworthy that even at that time sailors' clothes were different for work and ceremonial. At the same time, it was strictly forbidden to appear on deck in work dress.

The most interesting thing is that over the years of its existence, the clothing of sailors has practically not changed. In particular, the modern form of clothing was approved back in 1951. Of course, individual regalia and elements of clothing are gradually added to the naval uniform, in accordance with generally established rules. For example, currently the Navy provides women's sets uniforms, sailors may wear berets and high-top boots.

Navy uniform

Manufacturing material

Everything is as practical as possible here. In particular, seamen always went to tailoring natural fabrics, which have an increased margin of safety and are easily cleaned from contamination. Depending on the climatic conditions, the uniform was sewn from coarse wool or canvas. The first option is typical for the Baltic Fleet, the second for the Black Sea Fleet. Here it is necessary to clarify that the Black Sea men wore uniforms of white flowers, the rest of the fleets used clothes of blue color.

The revolution in the world of naval fabrics took place around the middle of the last century. At this time, sailors began to dress in uniforms, sewn from cotton fabric, which, depending on its consumer properties, received the following names:

  • A rag is the most substandard option that quickly fell into disrepair;
  • Glass - “keeps” its shape well, but quickly becomes salted, acquiring a characteristic shine;
  • The sergeant-girl is a durable and dense fabric that is not prone to quick wear, therefore it enjoys well-deserved respect.

Interesting! Here it is necessary to clarify that before the collapse Soviet Union, fabrics for the Navy were produced by the Ivanovo weaving factory. The material was of very high quality, and without fail passed the GOST standardization. Now private enterprises are engaged in the production of fabrics, and veterans of the Navy note a noticeable decrease in quality.

Casual sailor uniform

The set consists of several items of clothing, which may differ depending on the rank of the soldier and gender. However, regardless of these factors, uniforms always include:

  • Shirt;
  • Trousers;
  • Guys (uniform collar);
  • Shoes;
  • Headdress.

Let's consider each of the elements of everyday clothing in more detail.

Shirt

It is cut out according to the established pattern, provides for the presence of a close-fitting collar. Sleeves are straight, the front and back are sewn without seams. The style provides two pockets: a patch in the front and a secret with inside... There is always a tag on a sailor's shirt, on which a combat number is applied with indelible paint. According to the charter, a shirt can be worn outside. When a soldier is on watch, the shirt is tucked into his pants.

Trousers

For trousers, a dark blue cotton fabric is used. The style provides for the presence of side pockets and loops for wearing a belt. The belt itself is made of pigskin, complete with a copper plate decorated with the emblem navy.

Casual sailor uniform

Jack

This is an overhead collar, which must be included in a set of formal and casual clothing. The jack is sewn from blue cotton fabric, along the edges there are three white stripes symbolizing the victories of the Russian fleet in the Chesme, Gangaut and Sinop naval battles.

Such a collar is worn over a uniform shirt.

Headdress

A set of clothes for Russian sailors includes not one, but several hats:

  • Capless cap with cockade;
  • Hat with ear flaps;
  • Beret;
  • Pilot.

Shoes

Depending on the duty station, sailors may wear:

  • Yuft boots with thickened soles;
  • Barrel boots;
  • High top boots;
  • Sandals (Tropical regions only)

Note that since 2014, the laces on the boots have been replaced with rubber inserts.

Uniform of midshipmen and officers (everyday)

The officer's uniform includes the following elements:

  • A black cap or white;
  • Jacket and trousers;
  • Black coat;
  • Cream shirt: long and short sleeves;
  • Black tie;
  • Kashne;

  • Shoes: boots, boots and low shoes.

It should be noted that the everyday form of clothing can be complemented by a sweater of the statutory color, gloves, a demi-season jacket.

Ladies who have chosen the navy as their place of service wear the following set of clothes:

  • Flesh-colored tights;
  • Black skirt;
  • Cream colored blouse;
  • Tie;
  • Belt;
  • Beret or garrison cap;
  • Shoes or low shoes.

Winter uniform is complemented by a beret made of astrakhan wool, a coat, warm tights... It is allowed to wear a sweater and a cap with earflaps.

Summer casual dress

Dress uniform

If we consider the situation as a whole, then the parade differs from the everyday form of clothing only in its solemn colors: white colors prevail here. The dress uniform is also divided into men's and women's, is worn taking into account the weather conditions, and is intended for sailors and officers. Let's consider each of the possible options.

Parade uniform of the Navy

For midshipmen and officers

A cap is used as a headdress: white or black. V winter period, a hat with earflaps is put on, Officers of the highest command staff wear astrakhan hats with a visor.

The set includes a jacket in white or black: the second option is usually used in winter. The trousers are black, the shirt is white. The dress uniform is complemented by a golden belt and a black tie. Depending on the weather conditions, a soldier may have white or black (woolen) gloves on his hands. Wearing a white muffler is allowed.

For sailors and foremen

The dress uniform of conscripts must include a vest. Contract soldiers wear cream shirts with a black tie. In both cases, the "top" is complemented by black trousers. The shirt is white, on the head is a peakless cap of the same color. Sailors wear black low shoes on their feet.

In the winter season, the parade is complemented by a uniform pea jacket and a cap with earflaps. Comforters, white or woolen gloves are allowed.

Dress uniform of women sailors

In style, the full dress uniform resembles the everyday version. For special occasions only, female military personnel wear a white shirt with short and long sleeves, a golden belt, and a white muffler (for winter uniforms).

Dembel uniform of military sailors

According to the established tradition, servicemen leaving the reserve decorate their dress uniform with aiguillettes and other bells and whistles. It is quite natural that there are no strict standards here, so demobels are guided by personal preferences. It should be noted here that the demobilization uniform is considered non-statutory, therefore, prohibited to wear. However, the command usually turns a blind eye to this nuance, because after being transferred to the reserve, a former sailor becomes a civilian, so he can wear anything.

Here it is necessary to clarify that the sewing of the demobilization form is not a prerequisite. Some servicemen are retired in an ordinary parade, which looks quite impressive without any additional decorations.

Storage and care rules

According to the Charter, servicemen are obliged to independently monitor their uniforms. This means that the given set of uniforms must be regularly washed, ironed and repaired. This rule applies to all servicemen of the Russian Navy, regardless of ranks and rank.

Conclusion

The uniform of Russian sailors has always been associated with courage and valor. At all times, military personnel serving in the navy proudly wore peakless caps on which the name of the ship was written. Nowadays, the naval uniform is evolving, gradually adapting to the uniform of the Western style. This is reflected in the appearance of baseball caps, the replacement of vests with ordinary cotton T-shirts. Navy veterans do not approve of such innovations, but, unfortunately, their opinion does not solve anything in this matter.

In comparison with other states, the Russian fleet has not such a long history. The British and the Dutch, the Spaniards and the Portuguese began the development of the seas much earlier than the Russians, locked either by ice in the north, or in the "Swedish lake", as the Baltic Sea was called until the 18th century.

Key changes have taken place since the famous decision of the boyar duma "there should be sea vessels." The decision to create a fleet, initiated by Peter I, was one of the turning points in Russian history. And, of course, the sailors had to have special clothing, which has survived to this day as a form of the Navy.

The history of the form in the Russian fleet

In pre-Petrine times, there were no problems with the uniform for the fleet, in fact, as well as the fleet itself. The already formed separate group of Northern Pomor sailors had no military specifics, as well as a specialized form. From a trip to Holland, which was one of the leading maritime powers in Peter's time, the tsar learned not only the ability to build ships.

The first samples of military uniform for sailors came to Russia from there as well. Then the standard sailor's outfit included a wide-brimmed hat, usually felt, a coarse wool jacket called bostrog, short knee-length pants and stockings. The legs were protected by heavy boots made of sturdy leather, with buckles. This uniform was intended for the lower ranks, that is, sailors. The officer's uniform, as such, did not exist in the early years of the Russian fleet.

For a century since the creation of the Russian fleet, the form has not undergone almost any changes. Jackets gradually increase the collar-stand, as well as reduce the waist. At a certain point, the fleet undergoes a general fashion for long hair, sprinkled with flour, as well as on the abundance of gold in the decoration of the uniform.

But in everyday work on the ship there was no time to show off, so the lower ranks happily continued to wear the Peter's uniform, as well as things sewn from canvas. Loose wide trousers and shirts allowed sailors to carry out any work on the ship.

The 19th century brings numerous innovations to the life of the navy in terms of form.

At the beginning of the century, under the influence of general fashion, narrow, tailcoat-type uniforms penetrate into the fleet. Instead of raincoats, sailors are given narrow greatcoats, headdresses are changed to shako. According to a general assessment, at this time the army and the navy were practically equally equipped, which caused quite understandable indignation among the sailors.

In 1811, a trumpet cap appeared for the first time, currently associated only with the navy. In fact, she owes her birth to foragers, who obtained food for horses and often fed animals from headdresses. The sailors' peakless caps did not have the usual ribbons, as well as the names of the ships. Instead of them, on the ring, they were applied by the method of breaking through the crew numbers in large numbers.

The biggest changes in naval uniforms occurred in the 1860s - 1870s. It was at this time, through the efforts of individual representatives of the imperial family, that the fleet received a form that, with minor changes, has actually reached our days.

Fabrics used when sewing a uniform

To create clothing for the Navy in tsarist Russia, as in the USSR, natural fabrics were used. The most common was coarse wool. This was due to the frequent bad weather and cold in the Baltic - the cradle of the Russian fleet. Since the beginning of the campaigns in the Mediterranean and the creation of the Black Sea Fleet, Russian sailors have received a lighter and more comfortable form of canvas.

One of the main positive qualities of this material was its fantastic non-soiling. Almost any contamination, oil or paint was washed off clothes without special labor... In naval slang, this fabric was called "goddamn leather." The color scheme did not differ in variety, only white and blue (sometimes shades reached blue) colors.

It is interesting that the Black Sea Fleet always wore only white uniforms, while the Baltic, like the later Pacific, had mostly blue robes.

According to naval regulations, the sailors of the Black Sea Fleet were not allowed to be on the upper deck in a blue uniform.

In the second half of the twentieth century, this fabric was replaced by cotton samples. In the marine environment, the following fabrics have become the most famous:

  • “Petty officer”, a dense dark-colored fabric, is distinguished by the fact that it does not wrinkle well and does not fade, the most favorite fabric among sailors;
  • "Glass", for some time a uniform for the land army was sewn from it, perfectly holds the arrows, but due to the peculiarities of the composition it quickly becomes greasy, the surface begins to sparkle, for which it received its nickname;
  • "Rag", the worst kind of fabric, characterized by quick wear and tear.

V Soviet years the fabrics were of high quality and passed the obligatory certification of the state. In the 1990s, the Ivanovo enterprise that produced fabrics for the Navy was closed, and now it is working in this field a large number of private traders. This was not beneficial, since the fabrics they produce are not always of the required quality.

In recent years, there have been complaints about the use of synthetic fabrics for sewing work uniforms. This is dangerous, first of all, in the event of abnormal situations, such as fires on a ship.

Form for everyday wear

For a long time, many elements of the sailor's uniform did not change in principle. The basic clothing from the second half of the 19th century is a robe, or work suit. You can also find the outdated name "sailor dress", which consists of several elements.

A vest, or a marine sweatshirt, is worn directly on the body.

In the navy, this element of clothing, contrary to all myths, is relatively short-lived. The reason why sailors began to knit striped sweatshirts for themselves is to improve the sailor's visibility, both against the background of white sails, and in the event of a man getting overboard. For a long time, vests were banned.

At the moment, the vest is a symbol of the sea, although there are certain differences in different countries. The French uniform has 21 stripes - in honor of the number of Napoleon's victories. The English vest has 12 stripes according to the number of ribs in a person. In the Russian Navy, stripes are not counted, their number depends on the growth of the carrier. The stripes range in color from dark blue to black.

The vests of different colors presented now often have nothing to do with the fleet. So, green stripes are typical for border guards' uniforms, maroon stripes for units of the National Guard (former internal troops), blue ones are given to paratroopers.

A Dutch shirt is put on the vest, depending on the color, it is called a flannel (dark blue fabric) or a uniform (white). The shirt consists of one-piece back and front, as well as sleeves with cuffs.

The front of the shirt has a cutout on the chest; a pair of buttons are sewn on the inside.

On the back there is a large turn-down collar for attaching the so-called jack. In slang, this word means a blue collar, with a white lining and three white stripes on the front side. The three stripes symbolize the three great victories of the navy, these are:

  • Battle of Gangut in 1714, when the fleet of Peter the Great defeated the Swedes at sea for the first time;
  • The Battle of Chesme in 1770, the united squadron under the command of Count Aleskei Orlov defeated twice the superior forces of the Turks;
  • Battle of Sinop in 1853, when Admiral Nakhimov destroyed the entire Turkish squadron with one blow.

Also on the Dutch woman there is a slot for a pocket, in which there should be a book "combat number" with the duties of a sailor for all schedules and for all emergency situations. A white strip with a number printed on it is also attached there. Special indelible paint is used for this. In recent years, the battle number is often applied to paper, which is then laminated and sewn to the form.

The combat number consists of the first number, indicating the number of the combat unit, the second number, with the number of the combat post. The third and fourth digits are written together and indicate the number of the combat shift and the serial number of the soldier in this shift.

The officer's uniform consisted of a white or cream-colored shirt, as well as a jacket, usually woolen, and in bad weather leather with a fur lining.

The sailor's trousers have a special cut.

Instead of the usual fly and buttons in the belly area, they have a pair of buttons or hooks on the sides. This style was introduced in the 19th century and is necessary for the convenience and ease of taking off clothes in case of falling overboard. For this, bell-bottoms, extensions in the lower part of the leg were sewn on the trousers.

Experienced foremen of the midshipman and officers closely watched the sailors, who, for the sake of fashion, sewed these cuts. The improvements were treated quickly, as soon as they learned about the sewn trousers, the sailor was ordered to leave the ship, directly to the sea. Then the poor fellow was caught and politely explained the erroneousness of his actions.

The head was covered with either a peakless cap or a garrison cap. The first headgear, which at one time was extremely innovative and relevant, is not very comfortable on today's ships. However, like a jack or a vest, it is a symbol of the fleet, and sailors are not going to give it up. The peakless cap can be with a white or black crown. White is usually the color of the case, as the completely white top is too marks.

A special feature is the tape on which either the name of the ship, or the designation of the fleet in which the soldier is serving, or simply with the inscription "navy" is imprinted in gold letters. Previously, the names of the ships were written on the tapes, but due to the secrecy during the Cold War era, other spellings appeared on the tapes.

Now they are returning to old traditions again. The ribbon itself was needed not only for beauty. She was clamped in her teeth during work in the wind, so that the headdress would not be carried away into the sea. The peakless cap is being replaced by a garrison cap, a more comfortable piece of clothing in the cramped conditions of ships.

Officers wear caps, also white or black.

A distinctive feature of the "crab", as in the language of the Navy is called a special cockade with a star, anchor and laurel leaves. In addition to garrison caps, berets are worn on their heads, and in winter hats with earflaps.

Shoes are more complicated, as sea wolves and recruits are often organically intolerant of boots. For personnel, leather boots have been developed, known as burnouts (if the sole is leather), or gadi (rubber sole). Old-timers usually wear similar shoes, but made of chrome. Boots are issued to the coastal services, the marines, and in the event that the ship is sent for repairs. Interestingly, sandals are included in the tropical uniform.

The new shape of the XXI century

The reform of the army also affected the naval uniform. In Moscow, it is better to know what to serve the sailors, therefore, since the 2010s, the uniform began to be divided not only into ceremonial, everyday and work, but also into office.

Office Style clothing implies a lot of hard work in the office, by far the most important place in the fleet. This tunic is black, with a long or short sleeve, as well as several Velcro for designating the name and surname, in a modern manner. The set includes trousers from the same material, black leather boots, and a white cap.

The officer's uniform for parades or other official events consists of black or white trousers, a white shirt, a black tie with a gold clip, and a gold belt with a hanging dagger. A dagger is issued to an officer after graduation from college, and is a symbol of pride and honor. For a while, the daggers were canceled, but now they again adorn the officers of the Navy.

The uniform for women includes a shirt, tie and skirt, flesh-colored tights and shoes.

Wearing boots is allowed in cold weather, wool coat, comforters and hats with earflaps.
A special form of clothing is the demobilization outfit.

Leaving the service, many sailors want to emphasize their uniqueness, so they begin to decorate the uniform with a zeal worthy of the French sovereigns of the 17th century. Someone needs a new clean uniform with well-deserved signs and medals, someone sews on an infinite number of aiguillettes, chevrons and other attributes of a demobilized warrior.

Video

The appearance of uniforms in the navy was initially due to its military purpose - in boarding battles it was very important to distinguish one's sailors and soldiers from enemy soldiers. With the technical development of ships and weapons, boarding battles are a thing of the past. National differences in the uniform of sailors lost their former significance, the hygiene of clothing and the convenience of wearing and handling it on board came to the fore. This main reason the similarities of sailor clothes in different countries, therefore, over the past hundred years, the sailor uniform has remained practically unchanged.

The predominant colors of the marine form - black, blue and white- emerged from the following considerations. For about a hundred years in the navy, the predominant type of ship was the steamer with accompanying coal dust. Black Cloth Tunic I was not afraid of a small amount of coal dust, at the same time, on long voyages under the hot sun, it was convenient to be in light white clothes... And finally blue collar- in the color of the sea - remained a highlight of sailor clothing, its business card suitable for any occasion from parade to funeral. Just as the flag adorns the mast of an inexpressive gray ship, the jack decorates the sailor's uniform, enlivens it and makes the sailor himself brave, resourceful, honest.

The modern naval uniform for privates and officers was finally established in 1951. It consists of a shirt, trousers and a headdress.

The shirt and trousers of a modern Russian sailor are made of blue cotton fabric. The decoration of the sailor's shirt is big collar blue with white stripes along the edge (jack). The history of its origin is very interesting. In the old days, sailors were required to wear powdered wigs and oiled horsehair braids. The pigtails stained the robe, and the sailors were punished for this. So they came up with the idea of hanging a leather flap under the pigtail. No braids have been worn in the Navy for a long time, and the leather flap has turned into a blue collar, reminding us of old times. The sailors have a wide blue collar with three white stripes on their shoulders, like a blue wave with white foam- without it, the form is not a form.

Capless caps were established in November 1811. But the ribbons appeared on them later - in 1857. Sailors got ribbons from those distant times when sailors wore uncomfortable wide-brimmed hats. During storms or strong winds, hats were tied with scarves. Wives, mothers, brides gave scarves to sailors. They embroidered words of prayers, their names, anchors on scarves with gold thread. The sailor looked at the gift and thought: "I am faithful to you, my beloved, as the anchor is faithful to the ship." Many years have passed, hats have turned into caps, and scarves have become ribbons. In November 1872, by order of the admiral-general (chief of the entire fleet and the Naval Department), the type of inscriptions, the size of the letters and the shape of the anchors on the ribbons, as well as their length - 140 millimeters, were precisely determined.

Older people remember that earlier it was possible to read on the visor ribbons: "Northern Fleet", "Pacific Fleet", "Baltic Fleet" and "Black Sea Fleet". Now the custom of wearing a cap on ribbons the name of your ship is reviving again in the Russian fleet. The sailors love their ribbons, they wear them with pride, as if they say: "Look, the name of my ship is burning in gold on my ribbon, I don't hide it from anyone, on the shore I behave with dignity and hold on to my ship with all anchors, to my crew". Any sailor can feel how the ribbons of the peakless cap flutter over his shoulders, hug him around the neck.

Vest - jersey underwear with white and blue transverse stripes. The vest, as a kind of naval clothing, appeared during the days of the sailing fleet. Initially, the vests were made of harsh linen. In the second half of the 19th century, blue and white stripes appeared on this shirt. This was justified by practical necessity: the sailors working on the masts in such clothes were better visible from the deck against the background of the sky, sea and sails. In addition, if a sailor fell overboard, it was easier to find him, in a shirt with stripes, on the surface of the sea. The vest, in comparison with other uniforms, is very practical: it retains heat well, fits the body tightly, does not interfere with free movement in any kind of activity, is very convenient when washing and practically does not wrinkle. On August 19, 1874, the vest was officially announced required element marine form "for the lower ranks". Many years have passed, a lot has changed in the Navy, but this type of marine clothing "remained afloat." Many generations of Russian, Soviet, Russian sailors have not imagined and cannot imagine life without a vest. This shirt fell in love with sailors and over time became a symbol of maritime valor and brotherhood. The combination of stripes on the "vest" symbolizes the blue of the sky and the white scallops of traveling waves. Repeating the colors of the Andreevsky flag, the "vest" reminds the sailor of the sea and the ship. And it is no coincidence that the second, informal name of this, truly popularly loved element of marine equipment, sounds proudly and significantly - "sea soul"!

Striped vests and blue jackets appeared in the 19th century in the US Navy. Then blue became the color of sailor uniforms in most other fleets. Hence, one of the common names of the sailor arose - "blue jacket". Blue - the classic color of sailors' uniforms, accepted in all countries of the world - it symbolizes the color of the sea.

Rules for storing and caring for overalls

Rules for wearing the uniform of officers of the Navy, established in 1959 strictly define that the uniform must be in impeccable condition. This means that the costumes are washed and sewn on time. If any part is worn out, it is replaced with a new part.

The form must be washed clean and well ironed.... This applies to any type of clothing and any rank of the Navy. Seniors should follow up with colleagues, pointing out faults in washing or hemming.

In conclusion, we invite you to watch a very interesting and informative video, how the military uniform of the Navy changed:
