How to knit the first and last. Edge loop, side edge shaping

Edge hinges - this is, as they are also called, the edge loops of the jersey. They do not participate in the formation of the pattern, but at the same time they play an important role in the formation of the edge of the canvas. As a standard, in the scheme of the product you have chosen, this is the first and last loop of each row, but sometimes not only two extreme ones, but four or more can participate in the calculation ...

The execution technology depends on what kind of edge you need - smooth, neat and in no case should it stretch.

So, first things first.

Our task is to choose the correct technique for the execution of edge loops for your product.

Most often, knitters choose a "chain" edge, or sometimes it is also called a chain edge. It forms an even, neat row in the product in the form of a chain on both sides of the canvas.

It looks like this.

The scope of its application is quite wide. This is the decoration of plaques and collars, patchwork; in the details involved in the further set of loops (for example, when knitting the heel at the toe), complex jacquard and patent patterns.

In order for your knitted product to acquire such an edge, you must always remove the first loop when knitting, leaving the working thread behind the knitting needle, no matter which row you knit, front or back. The last loop in this technique is purl only.

If you need a strong tightened edge, for example, in the vertical slot of the buttonhole (hole) for a button, the edge of a blanket, or you will later sew on this element (for example, a pocket), then it is better to use nodular edge loops... They are not used very often, but they are also quite simple to implement.

You also always remove the first loop, as in the first case, while the working thread remains behind the knitting needle, but this time you knit the last loop of each row with the front one.

If your task is to decorate the edge of a scarf made using an elastic band, or if you need a stronger, sealed edge, then for such a case they are best suited in knitting. double edge loops... This is how it will look:

In the front row, the first loop is removed, the second is knitted with the usual front loop, at the end of the row, remove the penultimate one (thread by loop) and knit the last loop with the front loop for the far half of the loop. In the purl row, remove the first (thread in front of the knitting needle), knit the second with the usual purl, and at the end of the row remove the penultimate loop (thread in front of the loop), knit the last one with the purl for the far half of the loop. In this case, when calculating the loops, it is necessary to take into account that in this version there are four edging, and not two, as usual.

If you need to get a tight, neat, non-stretching edge, for example, for the open edge of a jacket, scarf, belt or placket, it is well suited double chain edging option... Such an edge is knitted on two loops at the beginning and at the end; when calculating the loops, take into account not two, but four loops. In the front row: remove the first loop as a front loop (thread at work), knit the second loop with the front crossed, knit the penultimate loop with the front cross, remove the last loop. In the purl row, knit the first and last loops with the purl, and remove the second and penultimate loops as purl (thread before work). If you are knitting a shelf for a jacket, then knit the hem with a "double chain" on the open edge, and on the other with a simple chain for further sewing.

And I like the edge that turns out if the edge at the beginning of the row is removed as purl: threadfrontwork, and then - after removing the edge thread is transferred to the loop. At the end of the row we knit the front edge. I don’t know if I explained it clearly ... But it turns out a very smooth edge, with which you can even make out the cuts: in the side seams, on the sleeves, etc. Such an edge does not turn anywhere, does not warp.

More about the types of edge loops

What is an edge buttonhole? The first and last buttonhole in each row of the knitted fabric you knit is called the hem. These loops are knitted in different ways, depending on the nature of the knitting and the type of seam with which you will connect the parts. But, no matter what fabric you take, the last loop in the row must be removed without knitting, as with purl knitting, holding the thread before knitting. And in the back row, it is imperative to knit the removed front loop.

If the penultimate stitch in the pattern is knit stitch, you must move the thread forward between the needles. If the penultimate loop is purl, the thread will already be in the correct position. In the next row, do not forget to knit the removed front loop; to remind you of this, the thread will be in the knit position.

Smooth edge

This edge is knitted for a "line" seam. On the front side of knitting, remove the first loop, as in knitting, and knit the last knitting loop. On the seamy side of knitting, remove the first loop, as with purl knitting, and then knit the last purl loop.

Garter stitch edge

This type of edge loops is necessary so that when sewing a seam, the edge knitted fabric did not twist. The execution must be carried out both on the front side and on the seamy side of the work. We remove, without knitting, the first front loop and knit the last front loop.

Garland edge

We remove the first front loop on the front side of the work. We knit 1 yarn over, 1 knit yarn and pull it through the loop that was removed before. Remove the first purl loop on the seamy side of knitting. We knit 1 yarn over, 1 purl loop and pull it through the loop that was removed before.

3 more types of edge loops and 3 ways to make the edge of the product even here:

Double edge loop

This buttonhole goes especially well with garter knitting. The edging consists of two loops and is performed as follows:

1st row (front side) - front loops. At the beginning of the row, the edge is removed in the usual way and the entire row is knitted behind the front wall, except for the last two loops. At the end of the row, the penultimate loop is removed without knitting, the thread is located in front of the loop, and the hem is knitted in the wrong way 2.

2nd row (seamy side) - purl loops. At the beginning of the row, the edge loop is removed, the next (removed) loop is knitted with the front loop behind the back wall, and all the rest (except the last two) are knitted in the purl method 1. At the end of the row, the penultimate loop is removed, the thread is placed in front of the loop, and the edge loop is knitted with "marina" "purl.

The 3rd row (front side) is knitted like the 1st, etc. The edges of the canvas stocking knitting do not twist with double edge loops.

Purl loop knitting in method 2 (purl “Maryina”). Remove the edging and place the working thread in front of the left knitting needle, pass it over the index finger of the left hand, pass it between the index and middle fingers on the palm, press with the little finger and ring finger together with a spoke.

Insert the right knitting needle into the loop from right to left behind the working thread in front of the left knitting needle (Fig. 31, a). Then, using the index finger of your left hand, bring the thread to the end of the working knitting needle clockwise and pull it into the loop (Fig. 31, b), transfer the new loop to the right knitting needle.

This is how all purl rows should be knit loop by loop. After the purl stitches, knitted in method 2, in the next row, the front stitches are always knitted behind the back wall.

Now you can pull out one of the needles, take it in right hand, and knitting needles with dialed loops - to the left and start knitting. The thread coming from the ball should lie on the index finger of the left hand and be clamped with the rest of the fingers along with the knitting needle.

Then, with the right knitting needle, grab the extreme loop from the left knitting needle with a movement from right to left and remove without knitting (Fig. 5). And then at the beginning of each row, we will remove the extreme loop (which is called the edge loop). Thus, the knitted fabric has two edge loops, they serve to form the edge or side edge of the fabric. Therefore, the appearance of the hem depends on how you knit an edge loop.

There are 2 main ways to knit an edge loop, resulting in a chain edge and a knotted edge.

1. Chain edge(Fig. 6) is formed if the edge loop at the beginning of the row is removed, the thread is before work, and at the end of the row is knitted with the front loop. Moreover, for every 2 rows of knitted fabric, there is one edge loop.

This edge is suitable for almost all patterns and is the most common, especially in cases where edge loops are expected to be pulled into a seam.

2. The "nodular" edge(Fig. 7) is formed if the edge loop at the beginning of the row is removed, the thread is at work, and at the end of the row you knit the front loop. In this case, there is also 1 edge loop for 2 rows of knitted fabric. However, the “knotted” hem edge differs from the “chain” edge in that it is less stretchable, so it is recommended to perform it in cases where you need to get an open edge, for example, when sewing the slats of jackets, vests, vertical holes for buttons, etc. etc.

In any case, both edges of the knitted piece must be made the same, otherwise one edge will be longer than the other.

In some cases, the edge loops are not removed, as described above, but are knitted equally on both sides). In this case, there is 1 edge loop per 1 row of knitted fabric, and the edge edge is more stretched than the main product, therefore, the method of removing the edge loops is still preferable.

Edging loops are not included in the pattern. That is, if the description indicates that you need to dial 20 loops, then this means that 2 of them are edging (one on both sides), and the remaining 18 loops are involved in the formation of the pattern.

Knitting is a fun and rewarding hobby that can transform a simple ball of yarn into a beautiful and fashion model clothes. To achieve this result, you should learn to do it neatly and beautifully. In a knitted thing, it is important not only how the pattern and style of the resulting product looks, but also such a small detail as the edges of the parts. The article will look at ways how to knit edge loops with knitting needles.

What does it mean

The first and last stitches in the row are considered to be edged. They are not taken into account in the pattern rapport - they go like the design of the extreme line of the canvas. Sometimes the hem is made of two or even three loops. How to make an edge loop in a part depends on the further use of the edge of this blade:

  • whether they will be sewn with a special seam;
  • whether the loops will be typed on the knitting needles for subsequent knitting;
  • whether it will be the finished extreme line of the product detail.

Also, the different ways of knitting an edge are determined by the structure of the yarn, the style of the knitted thing and the type of seam with which the parts will be connected.

Several ways to make an edge

How to correctly knit edge loops should be considered with several examples.

Chain loops

The presented edging technique is the most common. It is ideal for knitting practice for beginners. Due to the fact that the edge is neat, the seam is flat and even - this is preferable for openwork products or knitted with a thin thread. The disadvantage of the considered method of performing edge loops is the twisting of the edge of the web.

This technique is performed in the following sequence:

  1. Remove the initial loop (which is also the edge loop) onto the working knitting needle, holding the thread behind the knitting needle.
  2. Knit the entire row, and the last loop can be knitted with the front or the wrong one. If you make a front edge, you get an edge consisting of knots that are one above the other. If the latter is knitted with a purl loop, then the extreme line is formed in the form of a smooth chain.
  3. Turning the work, you should remove the initial loop, keep the thread in front of you and continue knitting with purl stitch, knit the final one, according to the instructions above.

The detailed technique can be seen in the video.

Knotted edge

How to knit an edge with knitting needles so that the edge of the resulting product does not curl? For this, a method of knitting the edge with knots is selected. This look is ideal for making garter stitch details. It is very similar to the first method, but it has some differences. The initial loop must be removed as the purl one, that is, the thread must be in front of the loop. The end loop in the row is made with the front. From the seamy side, the same actions are carried out, but only the other way around.

Chain "squared"

If you want to have a dense, but neat texture along the edge line, then you should choose a way to knit the edge of the product with a double chain. This type of hem can be used in a scarf, waistband and open edges of a sweater. The edge is made from two loops located at the edges of the part in each row. In the front row, the initial loop must be removed, and the second must be knitted in a crossed manner (how to do this, you can watch the video in detail). Knit the remaining two loops as follows: make one crossed, and simply remove the last. On the reverse side, tie the first two loops with the wrong side, remove the penultimate one, and knit the last one with the wrong side.

Decorative edge

In this way, the edges of scarves, belts and other parts of clothing are knitted, because the parts are smooth and do not twist. For its implementation, the following scheme is selected:

  • two loops at the beginning and at the end of the strip are knitted in this way - on the front, the initial loop is removed, and the next one is made purl;
  • at the end of the strip, the penultimate one is made purl, and the last one is removed;
  • on the reverse side, all 4 hem are tied with purl stitch.

Pearl edge

The presented type of execution of edge loops is used in the design of the edges of shawls and rugs. Things knitted in this way look neat, the edges do not stretch or curl. To make the edges, three loops are taken from both ends of the strip. From the front side, knit them as follows: the first and third purl, and in the middle of the front. Tie the last three at the end of the strip in the same way. The reverse side is tied in sequence: the initial and third are front, and in the middle, the wrong side. At the end of the strip, do the same.

Scalloped edge

Knitting for beginner craftswomen should not be difficult, since the extreme line should be straight and neat. Therefore, for them, the edge loop must be performed in a simple way... It should be noted that this type of knitting of the edge of the part is no worse than others - the product around the edges does not stretch, does not curl and looks even and neat.

Front row: the initial loop is removed, the thread should be at work, and the last one is knitted with the front one.

Reverse row: the initial one is removed, the thread is before work, and the final loop is knitted with purl stitch.

Flat edge

Using the presented method in knitting, a dense and neat edge is obtained, it does not curl or stretch. This can be clearly seen in the presented photo. Knitting this type of edge is easy, the main thing is not to forget what and how to do in the front and back rows. To make a flat edge, knit with knitting needles on the front side: the initial and final loops are knitted with the front knit, while the loops are captured by the back wall. On the reverse: remove the start and end loops so that the thread is before work.

Different ways the execution of the edge loops also form various types of the edge of the product. All types are completely uncomplicated, as a result of which any, not even an experienced knitter, will master them. The main thing is to use them correctly when knitting any product.

For each method, a complete and detailed instructions, and also a video is presented that will help in achieving the new goals in knitting products.

Knitting has its own rules and nuances. When making a product, it is important that it has a flawless appearance. There are loops that do not take part in the formation of the rapport, but are very necessary when decorating the edge.

Different kind of edge knitted goods will be formed depending on the method of knitting the edge loop: serrated or even. The edge loop is the first and last in a row. Although, there are options for an edging of two or three loops.

In this article, we suggest detailed description each of the options for performing edge loops and training video. To make the model look harmonious, you need to pay attention to each stage of the work. Therefore, a detailed description of each method will help to competently finish the part.

When choosing the right option, take into account the purpose of using the edge, the style of the model, the structure of the yarn. The edge in the product serves for:

  • stitching parts with a regular or special seam;
  • a set of loops for the next part;
  • the end of the product.

Edge loops are made with knitting needles using simple techniques... These are all familiar varieties with a knitting technique.

Chain edge

The most common technique is to chain the sides of the product.

Such details are easy to sew, the edge is uniform and flat. A small minus - the canvas curls. But, if you are going to stitch parts, then this drawback will be eliminated.

How to knit chain stitches? In odd rows, the first is simply removed on the right working needle (the thread remains at work), and the last is knitted with the front needle. On the second side of the canvas, also remove the first, but the thread should now be in front of work, and knit the last with the usual purl. The most common option is used by both experienced and novice craftswomen.

Experienced knitters also use a chain-edging option with a lower degree of curl. To do this, in odd rows, the first is performed with a crossed, and the last with a regular front loop. Turning knitting, they simply remove both the first and the last. In this case, the thread is in front of your work.

Teeth and nodules

So that the edge does not curl at all, there is a serrated or nodular way of making the end loops with knitting needles.

In this version, the hem loops are ideally combined with garter stitches. The difference between the method consists in changing the technique of knitting the first and last loops of the row. Remove the first one in the odd one, carefully placing the thread before work, knit the final one with the front one. On the reverse side of the fabric, remove the first as the front one (place the thread behind knitting), the final edge loop is the usual purl. It looks more original, therefore it is often used in various models.

Double edge

Double edge loop is an option for decorating a fastener. Also matches perfectly with a scarf pattern. The design involves two edging, but on one side of the row. In the odd one, the first is removed on the knitting needle as usual, the second is knitted with the front one. At the end of the next one - remove the penultimate one (thread in front of the canvas), knit the last one with the purl. The bar keeps its shape well, fits harmoniously into the overall appearance of the product. Decorate the second side of the part (where there is no fastener) with a regular chain, because this will be the place of stitching. Therefore, you can make it easier.

Pearl edge

In this case, the edge of the web is very flat and flat. The front side of knitting is the first and last crossed front side, on the back - remove the same loops as purl. Frames beautifully summer models both women and children. Helps out when working with fine yarns and small patterns.

Double chain

This option also involves two edging on each side of the row. At the beginning (front side of the product), remove the first on the right knitting needle, and the second with the wrong one. The penultimate one at the end of each row is also knitted, the next one is removed. Turning knitting - at the beginning and at the end of the row, knit both edging with simple purl. Great for knitting belts, scarves and shoulder straps. The product keeps its shape, does not curl or stretch.

Garland of edging

Remove the first one, then the yarn over, knit the next one with the front one and stretch it through the removed one. On the seamy side of knitting, repeat the same, only the loops are knitted with the seamy side. Decent end of the rows, simple to execute and looks good. Suitable for any style and different yarn structure.

Rice edge

The original design of the edge is very simple. The first and last three loops are knitted with a "rice" or "pearl" pattern.
The edge does not stretch, does not curl, perfectly decorates shawls, rugs, blankets. Thick items even with simple drawing look more decorative. Some people manage to create a frame with a different tone of yarn, which gives a unique flavor.

As you can see, there are many ways. It is very easy to choose the right one. For any option, there are videos that the craftswomen post on their pages.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the technique of knitting edge loops and choose the most suitable one for your product. Try each one to make sure it matches the yarn, pattern, and style of your model. Practice a little not to tighten or loosen the canvas. In this case, your product will be very harmonious.

During work, carefully monitor the position of the working thread - this affects the correct design of the side braids. A little experience will give you confidence and help you quickly tackle any option.
