We will show you how to build simple pattern and sew a baby jumpsuit with your own hands in just one evening!

Children's jumpsuit: choice of materials

How to sew a do-it-yourself jumpsuit? Our model can be sewn both from summer, thin fabric, and in a demi-season version - for example, from jeans. For maximum comfort, the upper part of the jumpsuit is made of double. The lower fabric is visible on the lapel of the pocket and the fasteners of the frames, in addition, it acts as a piping along the edge of the straps, the pocket and the top edge of the jumpsuit. Thin cotton is ideal for bottom fabrics.
The color of the fabric should be contrasting or differ by several tones from the front fabric.

In addition to the fabric, you will need accessories to adjust the straps of the jumpsuit. We used a set of drawstring frames and a plain frame of the same width for each strap. Another option is with buttons. Sew loops on the top of the jumpsuit, and sew on the buttons on the shoulder straps at the required height. In this case, the straps need to be sewn with a 5-7 cm margin. You can also buy special fasteners for overalls, both plastic and metal.

To finish the pocket, we sewed a large button to its lapel. You can also decorate such a pocket with embroidery or appliqué.

So, let's sew a baby jumpsuit with our own hands!

We will tell you how to make a do-it-yourself jumpsuit pattern using ready-made trousers or shorts of a suitable size. Prepare a pencil, ruler and scissors, as well as a large sheet of paper. It is most convenient to draw a pattern on graph paper, which is sold both cut into sheets and in a roll. You can also glue a few sheets of plain paper, take a newspaper, or the rest of a roll of wallpaper.

Fold the sample in half with one pant leg inside the other. Straighten the crotch seam. Trace the outline of the specimen on the paper: the crotch line, top and beginning of the side seams. Repeat on the other side of the sheet, straightening the crotch seam on the back.

Set aside from the top line the required length of the jumpsuit legs and the desired width from the side seam line. Make the width loose by adding about 2 cm to your waist and hips.

From the center of the front waist line, draw a vertical upward, its length equal to the desired length of the top. Set aside half the width of the upper part to the right, it should be 2-3 cm less than the width of the chest (the distance between the beginning of the armpits). Draw a smooth lateral line top, finishing it 3 cm above the waistline.

On the back half of the legs, draw the same vertical and then draw the back top of the jumpsuit, which is narrower than the front. Beveled diagonals are equal to the width of the straps, on average 3.5-4 cm.

Cut the top of the jumpsuit off the leg.

Draw the desired outline of the pocket on the front half. Transfer it to a separate sheet of paper and finish drawing the top lapel, as shown in the diagram. The height of the lapel is half the height of the pocket itself.

Draw the strap pattern separately. Its length can be determined live on a child, or you can measure the length from the front waistline to the back waistline over the shoulder, and then subtract the height of the front and back top of the jumpsuit from there. Add 10 cm to the resulting value. The width of the strap at the top is 2-2.5 cm, expand the pattern closer to the bottom to 3.5-4 cm.

I sewed this baby jumpsuit for the baby at the end of winter - the beginning of spring, when it is still quite cold outside. Then we were still very small, we only lay on the walks, so we wanted to sew a warm and comfortable clothes... I took the jumpsuit pattern from the Ottobre children's clothing magazine (№4 - 2004), which, in my opinion, is the best magazine for children's clothing patterns.

I sewed for size 68 (by height), but according to this pattern you can sew on other sizes: 56-62-68-74-80-86.

In detail 3 - from below +2 cm!

The fabric for the overalls is polyester on padding polyester (quilted), if you wish, you can insert another layer of insulation (wool, holofiber). For older kids, you can use maida insulation, tinsulate - they are thin, but warm, so they are great for kids who start to walk on their own, and they just need light clothes that will not hinder their movements. Lining - cotton, jersey is possible. Better to choose natural fabric because it is in contact with the child's face and body.

Details (from main fabric and lining):

1. Breast - 1 child. with a fold.

2. Lateral front inserts - 2 children.

3. Backrest - 2 children.

4. Sleeve - 2 pcs.

5. Hood - 1 piece.

6. Plank - 1 piece.

I supplemented the pattern with a chest pocket and cuffs on the sleeves and legs so that you can close your legs and arms.

Additionally, I needed two zippers (I took 40 cm long, 50 cm can be used), Velcro.

I will dwell in more detail on the sewing process itself baby overalls... I coped with this task in a few evenings))

Pocket.
Sew the main fabric of the pocket with a lining from the seamy side, turn it inside out. We stretch along the edge and sew a pocket on the chest.

Lightning... Sew the zippers to the breast, but no lining.

We wash it out, then, together with the lining fabric, we stretch it along the front side. Similarly, we sew the second half of the zipper to the side inserts of the front.

If the zippers are detachable, then the zipper connection can be closed with a patch (I used a piece of brown leather).

Back and sleeves... We sew the middle seam of the back on the main fabric and on the lining separately.

Then we also stitch the sleeves along the raglan line to the main fabric and the lining.

Sew the crotch and side seams. These parts of the main fabric and lining fabric are sewn separately. Then we turn out the lining and insert it inside the jumpsuit.

Hood. We sew the details of the hood, leaving the edge open, which is sewn to the neckline. We turn it out, we stretch it along the edge.

We sew the main fabric of the hood to the collar, and then sew the lining fabric to hide the seam with a blind stitch or stretch it off.

Plank. A strap must be sewn onto the chest so that the neckline and hood fit snugly around the neck. We sew the details of the planks, turn them out, and shake them off. Sew one half of the Velcro on the ends of the strap, sew the other on the hood. The length of the Velcro must be chosen so that you can fasten the bar tighter and looser.

Cutting and preparing materials

As for the material that we will use in our work, the choice depends entirely on your desire and imagination. The main thing, when choosing a material, take into account that we are doing a thing for a child, therefore, the following requirements must be presented to the material:

  • The material should be practical.
  • The material must be strong and not wrinkled.
  • The material should not cling to dirt, dust, moisture.

The main canvas should be about sixty or one hundred centimeters in size, the lining should only be created from quilted material of the same size. It is clear that we will choose the same dimensions for the linings. We also need a little decorative fabric for decoration.

Probably, there will be no problems, different scraps and strips of such material can definitely be found in stocks of any woman. You will also need an elastic band of about thirty centimeters in length, a cord of about seventy centimeters, a flat zipper about twenty centimeters long and a spool of strong threads.

The finished pattern can be easily downloaded from the Internet. It needs to be printed on a printer in a 1x1 size, cut out, and then draw the fabric using a paper template. When cutting fabrics, keep in mind that you need to leave allowances of 1 cm.

For calculations and drawing patterns, use your child's measurements. In the lesson, we use standard measurements of size 28 for a height of 104 cm.

Children's measurements required for construction (height 104 cm size 28) (see details):

  1. Chest circumference (OG) - 56 cm
  2. Waist circumference (OT) - 53 cm
  3. Hip girth (OB) - 61 cm
  4. Neck circumference - 28 cm
  5. Front length to waist (RTA) - 27 cm
  6. Shoulder length (Dpl) - 8.5 cm
  7. Back length to waist (DTS) - 25.5 cm

  14. Leg length with inside- 45 cm
  15. Knee height - 35.5 cm

Pants bottom width - 32 cm (the size depends on the model and personal preferences and can be increased or decreased)

Measure Seat height It is calculated as follows: Measurement 13 minus Measurement 14 = 63-45 = 18 cm. Also, the measurement The height of the seat can be measured.

Rice. 1. How to take baby measurements

16. Control measurement of planting depth(Fig. 2) - measured from the 7th cervical vertebra along the back, passing a measuring tape between the legs, to the jugular cavity along the front. This measurement is necessary to control the finished base pattern. For a comfortable fit, the measurement on the pattern should be 3-4 cm larger than the measurement taken.

Rice. 2. Control measurement of planting depth

IMPORTANT! The increase in freedom of fitting to the Semi-girth of the chest is selected individually, base the choice of the size of the increase, based on the thickness of the fabric and insulation, as well as the desired style of overalls - from 4 to 8 cm. building process.

Basic pattern of baby jumpsuit - building a mesh

We start construction from the upper left corner of a sheet of paper, put point A. Grid width: AA1 = ½ OG + 8 cm = 56/2 + 8 = 36 cm.

From point A, draw down a segment AD = Back length to waist + Leg length from the outside + 6 cm (increase in fit and lapel) = 25.5 + 63 + 6 = 94.5 cm.

From point A1, release the vertical line down, from point D to the right, draw a horizontal line. Point D1 was obtained at the intersection.

Armhole line. AG = Armhole depth + 1.5 cm (increase) = 14 + 1.5 = 15.5 cm.

Waistline. From point A, lay down the segment AT = TPA + 2 cm (for an increase) = 25.5 + 2 = 27.5 cm.Draw a horizontal waist line TT1.

Hip line. From point T, lay down the segment TL = 14 cm (Height of the hips as measured). Draw a horizontal line of the hips, points L1 and L2 are obtained.

Step line. From point T, put down a segment of the vehicle = 18 cm (seat height) + 2 cm (increase for landing) = 20 cm.

Knee line. TC = 35.5 cm. Draw a horizontal dotted line of the knee; points K1 and K2 are obtained.

Pants bottom line. DH = 4 cm (trouser cuff). Draw a horizontal dotted line for the bottom of the HH1 trousers.

Draw horizontal segments from the marked points - points G1, T1, L1, C1, K1, H1, D1 are obtained.

Side line. Divide GG1 in half (point G2) and draw a side line vertically through point G2.

Construction of a bodice pattern for a jumpsuit

Back pattern

Back neck. From point A, set aside 1 / 6ОШ + 1 cm = 28/6 + 1 = 5.5 cm and 1.5 cm upward (for all sizes) to the right. Draw the neckline of the backrest along the pattern.

Armhole width. Г3Г4 = Half-girth of the chest / 4 + 2 cm (increase) = 28.5 / 4 + 2 = 9 cm. From point Г1 to the left and to the right, set aside Г2Г3 = Г2Г4 = 4.5 cm (½ the width of the armhole).

Back shoulder line. From point P, set aside 2 cm down and draw a short horizontal auxiliary line.

Draw a line of the shoulder of the back equal to the Length of the shoulder according to the measurement + 1 cm (increase) so that the extreme point of the shoulder lies on the auxiliary horizontal segment.

Draw a 2 cm perpendicular from the bottom corner of the armhole. Draw the armhole of the back as shown in the drawing.

Shelf pattern

The rise of the front. From the waistline, set aside T1A1 = Front length to waist (accident) + 2 cm (increase) = 27 + 2 cm = 29 cm.

Shelf neckline. From point A1 with radius R = 1 / 6ОШ + 1 cm = 28/6 + 1 = 5.5 cm, cut the neck of the shelf.

Draw the length of the shoulder of the shelf in the same way as the shoulder of the back.

Creation of a pattern of trousers

Front half of trousers

From point C1, set aside to the right C1C3 = 1/10 Hip half girth + 0.5 cm = 3.1 + 0.5 cm = 3.6 cm. C1C4 = C1C3. Draw the line of the C3C4 bow along the pattern.

Connect points C3 and H1 with an auxiliary straight line. Set aside 0.5 cm at a right angle from the center of C3H1 and draw a slightly concave seam line.

Bottom line of the front half of the trousers. Н1Н2 = 1/2 Bottom widths by measure - 1 cm = 32 / 2-1 = 15 cm. Extend segment D1D2 by 0.3 cm on each side. Draw an arrow line vertically upward from the center of segment Н1Н2.

Back half of trousers

From point C, set aside CC4 = 1/4 CC2 + 1 cm = 18.25 / 4 + 1 = 5.5 cm to the left. Draw segment C4L along the pattern.

Arrow line. Divide the segment C4C2 in half and draw an arrow line as shown in the drawing - the point K4 and H3 is obtained.

The width of the bottom of the front half of the trousers is calculated by the formula: ½ Width of the bottom by measure + 1 cm = 32/2 + 1 = 16 + 1 = 17 cm. From point H3 set aside 8.5 cm to the left and right. Points H4 and H5 are obtained. Extend segment D3D4 by 0.3 cm on each side.

Connect points L2 and H4 - point K3 is obtained.

Measure the segment K4K3 and set aside the same value from point K4 to the left: K4K5 = K4K3. Connect the points C4K5, set aside an auxiliary perpendicular 0.7 cm long through the center of the segment to the right and draw a slightly concave line along the template.

On the shelf, build a piece of the stitching strip 3.5 cm wide, reshoot the piece of the strip on tracing paper separately. On the pattern, mark the width of the elastic drawstring.
