Jasmine planting and care in the open field in autumn

We tell the rules for planting and caring for mock oranges in the open field. We describe in detail when and how best to plant garden jasmine.

We are considering caring for a plant in the garden: watering, fertilizing, pruning, flowering, preparing for winter, as well as diseases and pests.

Which is correct: mock orange or garden jasmine?

Mock orange belongs to the Hortensia family, and jasmine belongs to the Olive family. At the same time, the shrubs are quite similar to each other, especially with a sweet and strong aroma, which is why confusion arises.

In Russia and the CIS countries, mock orange is often called garden jasmine, but real jasmine is a heat-loving plant (subtropical zone) and freezes in harsh climates. We successfully grow some of its species at home or in greenhouses (Indian, sambac, etc.).

Our outdoor planting guidelines and tips for outdoor care are for mock orange, or popularly known as "garden jasmine".

  • These names are used in the article as synonyms, since under these names one and the same plant is hidden.

In Russian gardens, the crown (common) mock orange (ordinary), virginal, hybrid winter-hardy varieties of mock orange Lemoine and the selection of Vekhov Nikolay Kuzmich are most often grown.

For the excellent development and flowering of the plant, the planting site, soil and soil mixture, planting distance and its depth play an important role.

This is a kind of foundation that provides comfortable conditions for growing mock orange in the open field for the next 25-35 years.

Landing place

The plant is best suited for a quiet place that should be well lit, especially in the first half of the day, but light partial shade is also allowed at noon. It is best to plant mock orange on the south, southeast and southwest sides.

Garden jasmine is able to grow in the shade, but in this case flowering will be much weaker, it will stretch out and take on a less beautiful appearance.

Do not plant shrubs in places where rain or melt water accumulates, as well as where groundwater lies closer than 150 cm from the surface of the earth.

Soil and acidity

Mock orange loves fertile land with high air and moisture permeability. It is well suited to humus-rich light and medium loamy soils. At the same time, garden jasmine is able to grow in poor soil, but then the development and flowering of the bush will be weaker.

Heavy clay soils are not suitable, in this case more powerful drainage and a “lighter” soil mixture are needed. On sandy soils, on the contrary, you can do without drainage, and it is better to replace part of the sand with garden soil.

The optimal level of soil acidity for mock orange is pH 6.5-7.5 (close to neutral).

soil mixture

Substrate options for garden jasmine.

  1. Leaf land, humus, turf (garden) land, peat in equal parts - a universal option.
  2. Turf (garden) soil, humus (compost) and sand - 3:2:1. Well suited for clay soils and black earth.
  3. Humus, black soil - 1: 1. Preferred option for sandy soils.
  • It is advisable to add one glass of wood ash or two tablespoons of superphosphate to any soil substrate.

landing distance

Large shrubs and trees - 2.5-3 m. When group planting mock orange, the distance depends on its type, about 80-140 cm. If you want to make a hedge of garden jasmine then - 60-80 cm, the place should be well lit.

planting depth

When planting, the root neck of the seedling should be located approximately at ground level. The maximum depth is 2-3 cm, otherwise the risk of rot development is high.

How to plant garden jasmine? Instruction

  1. Dig a planting hole: depth and width - 50-60 cm. At the bottom of the hole, make a 10-15 cm drainage layer of crushed stone, gravel or sand.
  2. Pour in some soil mixture. Position the seedling in the center of the hole so that the base of the bush is approximately at ground level.
  3. Gradually fill the planting hole with soil mixture and compact it so that there are no voids.
  4. Trim all shoots to about 30% of their length (a couple of buds to a strong bud). Pour the seedling into the near-stem circle with 10-15 liters of water. Sprinkle a 3-4 cm layer of peat, bark or sawdust on top to keep the root ball moist longer.

Rules and Tips

  • Plant mock orange in cloudy weather or in the evening so that it takes root better.
  • It is advisable to dig a planting hole and fill it with a soil mixture 3-4 weeks before planting.
  • If the seedling has damaged roots, then remove them and treat the cut with charcoal powder.

When is the best time to plant marijuana in spring or autumn?

Garden jasmine is best planted in spring (April) or autumn (September-October).

A seedling with an open root system can only be planted in spring before the leaves bloom, otherwise it will die, and in autumn from September 10th to October 15th. Seedlings in containers can be planted throughout the growing season.

These dates for planting mock orange are also suitable for gardeners in the Moscow region, the Leningrad region, the Urals and Siberia.

Mock orange transplant

The garden jasmine shrub is relatively easy to transplant at any age. The optimal time for transplanting adult bushes is from late August to mid-October, but it is also possible in spring in April.

  1. The day before digging, water the mock orange abundantly so that it is easier to move it with a clod of earth, and it stocks up on nutrients.
  2. Trim young shoots of the current year (autumn) or last year's by 30-40% (spring).
  3. Carefully dig a bush, plant it in a new place with a clod of earth and pour 10-15 liters of water over it.

Mock orange: outdoor care in spring, summer and autumn

The shrub is quite unpretentious in care, drought-resistant and hardy to adverse external factors.

However, to obtain the maximum decorative effect of garden jasmine, it is necessary to properly care for it.

Watering

Moisture for mock orange is of great importance. With its lack, the bush may not bloom. Water the garden jasmine regularly, especially in hot and dry weather, so that the leaves of the shrub do not droop (loss of turgor).

The maximum need for moisture is from April to July, when the bush is actively growing, preparing for flowering and blooming. At this time, water approximately every 7-12 days with 15-30 liters of water.

In the spring, before flowering, it is advisable to spray the shrub with warm and soft water. For young plants, it is useful to add growth stimulants to the water ("Zircon", "Epin Extra" and others).

After the first watering in the spring, mulch the near-stem circle with a 3-4 cm layer of peat to retain moisture in the soil.

Soil loosening

During spring - summer, it is necessary to loosen the ground 4-6 cm deep 2-4 times. Also, remove weeds in a timely manner - they take away macro- and microelements from mock orange.

Top dressing and fertilizers

The first two years after planting, the mock orange does not need to be fed with mineral fertilizers. Additional nutrients garden jasmine needs for abundant and lush flowering.

  1. In early April (before the leaves bloom), dissolve 15 g of urea (urea), 15 g of potassium sulfate and 30 g of superphosphate in 10 liters of water and water the bush. Or water the plant with mullein infusion - 1:10.
  2. After 3-4 weeks (beginning - mid-May), repeat top dressing.
  3. Immediately after flowering, sprinkle 20-25 g of superphosphate (1 tablespoon) and 10-15 g of potassium sulfate per 1 m2 on the surface of the earth.

2nd option

  1. Before flowering (end of April - beginning of May), sprinkle two tablespoons of nitrophoska and a glass of wood ash on the surface.
  2. During flowering and immediately after it, pour with a solution: for 10 liters of water, 20-25 grams of superphosphate (1 tablespoon) and 10-15 grams of potassium.

Adviсe

Instead of mineral fertilizers during and after flowering, wood ash can be used. To do this, fill a glass of ash with 10 liters of water and insist for two days, and then pour the shrub into the trunk circle.

Bloom

The maximum attraction of garden jasmine is when the fragrant flowers open. It is for its pleasant, sweetish and powerful aroma that most flower growers love it.

The smell of mock orange has a beneficial effect on the human psyche and uplifts the mood. The plant usually blooms in the 3rd year after planting.

Flowering time

The flowering period of garden jasmine depends on its type and variety. In the conditions of the Moscow region, the coronal mock orange and garden forms based on it bloom first: golden (aureus), dwarf and variegated. They bloom almost immediately after common lilac(the beginning of June).

In the first two weeks of June, the small-leaved, thin-leaved, Schrenk mock orange blooms. In early - mid-July, the odorless, grayish, broad-leaved and fluffy mock-orange begins to bloom (blooms later than all).

The duration of flowering averages 20-25 days, in a shady place a little longer. Schrenk's mock orange blooms the longest, and, for example, Gordon's mock orange is able to bloom in the fall for the second time.

Why is the mock orange not blooming? What to do?

Jasmine garden may not bloom in some situations. The most common causes are: lack of light (grows in the shade), lack of moisture or nutrients (watering, top dressing), unsuccessful wintering (freezing of annual shoots), excessive pruning in spring or too deep planting.

Perhaps the mock orange does not bloom due to age, especially if you grew it from seeds (7-8th year) or from cuttings (4-5th year).

Proper pruning of mock orange: in spring, after flowering, in autumn

Garden jasmine needs annual pruning to form a decorative crown shape, especially vigorous species and varieties. Otherwise, it will thicken with young shoots and grow ugly.

Sanitary pruning in spring

Before the awakening of the kidneys (end of March - beginning of April), remove weak and damaged shoots growing inside the bush. If desired, you can shorten a few of the strongest branches, but proceed carefully, as excessive pruning can lead to a lack of flowering this year.

Sanitary pruning can be done at any time of the year. You will make a full-fledged formation of the crown of the bush after the mock orange has faded.

Anti-aging pruning

Approximately once every 2-4 years it is necessary to rejuvenate the plant. With an early vein in garden jasmine, cut off all shoots older than 10-12 years old at the very base of the bush (“on the stump”).

Due to such pruning, the crown of garden jasmine will be rejuvenated and powerful flowering and growth will be stimulated. New strong shoots will bloom next summer.

"Updating" the old bush

A very old or neglected bush is easier to rejuvenate with cardinal pruning.

  1. At the end of April, cut down all the trunks at ground level, and cut 3-4 of the healthiest ones at a height of 35-40 cm. Treat the cut points with garden pitch, and spread a 4-5 cm layer of humus around the bush and dig the soil a little (6-8 cm) .
  2. In summer, water the mock orange regularly and abundantly. It is also desirable to feed mullein infusion 1-2 times.
  3. In the fall, new shoots will appear from dormant buds, but in the spring, 3-4 of the strongest ones will need to be left, and the rest should be completely removed. These most developed shoots are the basis of a young shrub.

Formative pruning of mock orange after flowering

Formative pruning of garden jasmine is best done immediately after flowering (mid-June), so as not to disturb flowering, as it blooms on last year's shoots.

  1. First, remove all faded inflorescences. If spring was not pruned or there is a need, then completely remove all weak and damaged branches.
  2. Then cut the current year's shoots to last year's growth (the green section of the branch to the lignified part).
By October, these branches will have time to develop a new growth with lateral shoots, which will appear flowers next spring.
If you want to reduce the height of the bush, then cut off all or the longest shoots below the growth zone.
  3. Also prune inward-growing and bare, weakly flowering, 4-5 year old shoots to thin out. And if the bush is very thick, then cut off 20-25% of the old trunks at the base.

Pruning mock orange in autumn

You should not prune young shoots of garden jasmine in autumn if you want it to bloom next year. In autumn, if necessary, you can carry out sanitary pruning and thinning of the bush (growing inwards and weak shoots).

Preparing for the winter mock orange

Most varieties of the plant are distinguished by good winter hardiness, especially of domestic selection. Adult mock orange bushes do not need winter shelter, and it is advisable to mulch specimens up to 2 years old with a 4-5 cm layer of peat or pine needles.

If the tops of annual shoots freeze in an adult garden jasmine in winter, it will still bloom, and with the help of pruning in the spring it is easy to restore the crown of the bush.

In the conditions of the Moscow region, the Leningrad region, Siberia and the Urals, it is better to plant winter-hardy varieties.

Pests and diseases

Mock orange is rarely affected by pests or diseases, but it is important to regularly inspect the shrub for their presence.

The most common pests: weevil, mealybug, spider mite, aphid, scale insect and false shield. Aphids are especially common on young leaves of overgrowth.

Interesting to know

You can make honey from the nectar of the mock orange. This honey improves sleep, helps relieve fatigue and headaches.

The plant got its name because of the peculiarity of the structure of the stems, from which mouthpieces and chibouks for smoking pipes were made.

Main views with photo

Some types of gardeners and summer residents are most popular.

Jasmine small-leaved

This is a fairly compact shrub, which almost never reaches a height of more than 100 centimeters. In such a plant, the leaf plates are quite large and curved. Its flowers have a very pleasant smell, reminiscent of strawberries.

Common crown jasmine

The shrub is quite large. So, it can reach a height of 250 to 300 centimeters. During the flowering period, such a jasmine bush is decorated with very large and beautiful inflorescences that exude a pleasant sweetish smell. Leaf plates are painted in a rich golden color.

Jasmine fluffy

Such a plant is recommended to be grown in parks or in fairly large areas. The bush can reach a height of 400 centimeters, and this is the tallest plant of all types of jasmine. However, the peculiarity of this plant is also that its lovely flowers do not have an aroma. This species blooms quite late. Flowering lasts for 4 weeks.

Also very popular is the Ermine Mantle jasmine variety. This plant is quite compact and its height does not exceed 100 centimeters. Inflorescences are located along the entire length of the branches. Flowering lasts about 8 weeks.

Choosing a suitable landing site

These species and varieties can be found in many garden and summer cottages. As a rule, garden jasmine is planted in open ground in spring. In order for the plant to grow and develop normally, you need to know a few important rules for both planting and caring for it. As a rule, planting various types and varieties of garden jasmine is practically no different.

The main points in choosing a suitable landing site:

  1. When choosing a suitable place for this plant on the site, it is necessary to take into account the fact that it can adapt to almost any weather conditions. However, if you want your plant to have a spectacular appearance and bloom very profusely, then it should be planted in a place that is protected from strong drafts. The fact is that they have an extremely negative effect on this shrub. Also, garden jasmine grows best and develops in a well-lit place with a sufficient amount of direct sunlight.
  2. This shrub is recommended to be planted in close proximity to flowers that have a purple or deep blue color tint. For example, it will look great next to a delphinium or lavender. Jasmine also grows well next to hydrangea or spirea.
  3. Experts advise planting garden jasmine in the spring. However, this procedure can be carried out in the fall.

Choosing the right soil and planting

Garden jasmine, as mentioned above, is a rather unpretentious plant. But for its best growth, it should be more carefully attributed to the choice of soil, as well as to its direct planting.

  1. In view of its unpretentiousness, such a shrub is able to take root and grow well on almost any soil. However, preference, if possible, should be given to soil saturated with nutrients. It should be remembered that jasmine roots react extremely negatively to excessive moisture, so the choice should be left on a piece of land located on a not very high elevation.
  2. Pour sand mixed with small stones into the hole prepared for landing. This layer will act as a drainage. When planting a plant in the spring, it is recommended to pour 50 g of nitrophosphate into the hole. This will allow the plant to quickly take root in a new place.
  3. When the bush is planted, the soil will need to be compacted a little. Then the jasmine must be watered.
  4. In order for the plant to develop properly, it is necessary to systematically apply fertilizers to the soil.

Feeding rules

In order for your site to be decorated with a lush jasmine bush, you not only need to take care of it regularly, but also systematically fertilize the soil. It should be remembered that the very first top dressing should be carried out only 12 months after planting the plant in open ground.

Garden jasmine needs minerals. To feed the plant, it is recommended to use a nutrient solution consisting of 1 liter of water and 5 grams of superphosphate. Pour another 2.5 grams of urea and potassium sulfide into the resulting solution. After that, the solution is thoroughly mixed. It is used to fertilize this shrub.

Garden jasmine also needs organic fertilizers. So, for feeding it is recommended to use manure, as well as humus. But at the same time, it should be remembered that manure for top dressing should be used only in a diluted form, otherwise the root system of the plant may burn out. Manure is recommended to be dissolved in water in a ratio of 1:15.

Cropping Features

In order for the jasmine bush to be lush and fragrant, top dressing alone is not enough, it still needs to be properly looked after.

In order for the crown to always look well-groomed and spectacular, regular shaping pruning should be carried out. Both summer residents and gardeners have several secrets and rules regarding this procedure:

  • formative pruning should be carried out in the spring, when the shrub is in a vegetative state;
  • the longest branches must be cut off completely, and the short ones are shortened by ½ part;
  • for more abundant flowering, anti-aging pruning is carried out, or rather, all empty branches are removed;
  • in an adult bush, the central trunk must be cut to 45–50 centimeters, while the rest are removed entirely.

Every year, it is imperative to inspect the shrub and remove damaged as well as diseased branches.

Preparing for the winter

In order for the plant not to die in the winter, it must be properly prepared for this difficult period. To do this, perform a few very simple manipulations:

  1. It should be remembered that adult specimens are more frost-resistant than young ones. Therefore, adult plants may well not be prepared for the winter period. However, those jasmines that are still quite young need this procedure.
  2. When the shrub fades, it should be wrapped with a material specially designed for this. Ordinary straw can also be used for this purpose.
  3. So that the jasmine roots do not suffer during the winter cold, in autumn you need to dig up the soil around the trunk and do not forget to add compost to it.
  4. If desired, in the spring, this shrub can be transplanted to a new place.

Transplant Features

Transplanted garden jasmine in the spring. To do this, you need to prepare the soil by digging a hole in it, which in size should correspond to the volume of the root system of the shrub. A plant is transplanted into this hole, while the rules are similar to those that apply to planting such a shrub in spring.

Reproduction methods

Propagating garden jasmine is very simple. So, there are several ways:

  1. Seeds. Sowing seeds is carried out both in open ground and in a box at home (growing through seedlings).
  2. Cuttings. It is recommended to cut the cuttings in the first days of June. They are then planted either in open soil or in a greenhouse.
  3. Run away. In the spring, shoots should be prepared by separating them from the mother plant. The choice should be stopped on the strongest shoots. After they overwinter, with the onset of the spring period, they are transplanted to a permanent place.
  4. division of the root system. This is not the most popular breeding method. Division is recommended in autumn.

It should also be remembered that indoor and garden jasmine are different cultures, and each of them requires special care.

Jasmine is a symbol of passion and love

Jasmine is a multi-stemmed shrub that can grow to a height of 0.8 to 4 m, has whole green leaves and snow-white or cream flowers with a sweet-refreshing aroma.

For unpretentiousness and abundant flowering, this shrub is also loved by gardeners, it can be found in almost every area.

planting jasmine

In order for jasmine to take root quickly, grow well and bloom profusely, you need to choose the right place and prepare the soil.

Location selection

For jasmine, you can select any area, it also grows on the north side in the shade. It is a shade tolerant plant, but in a sunny location it will grow faster and bloom more profusely.

When choosing a site, it is important to remember that the shrub does not like close approach and stagnant groundwater.

Choice of landing time

The ideal time for planting this shrub is early spring or autumn, since during this period the seedlings have not yet had time to open their buds. Gardeners for planting jasmine are advised to choose October.

Soil preparation

Jasmine can grow in any soil, but prefers fertile soil. Before planting a shrub, you need to dig up the ground well, make a hole about 50 cm deep and add nitrophoska per 1 seedling 30 grams.

Experienced gardeners advise planting jasmine in a high area and preparing drainage from sand, crushed stone, gravel and brick.

How to plant jasmine?

The soil for planting jasmine must be fertile, so it is necessary to prepare drainage

When the soil and the planting hole are ready, you can place a seedling in it. Make sure that the distance from the roots to the walls of the pit is about 10 cm.

Sprinkle the root system of the seedling with earth, the root neck can be deepened by 3 cm, but no more.

Water the jasmine generously after planting. If everything is done correctly, then the seedling will quickly take root in a new place.

reproduction

Jasmine propagates in several ways: layering, dividing the bush, cuttings and seeds.

seeds jasmine is sown in open ground at any time of the year, including winter. For winter sowing, you need to choose calm weather with a temperature not lower than -10 ° C. To do this, beds 30 cm deep are prepared on the snow and seeds are placed in them, then they are covered with large branches and straw. In the spring, the shelter must be removed, and the seedlings should be protected from direct sunlight.

If selected for reproduction cuttings, they need to be prepared in advance in the fall, stored all winter in the basement, and planted in the soil in early spring. As soon as the cuttings begin to grow, they are hilled to accelerate the growth of the root system.

To form layers, young shoots are taken in early spring. To do this, they are laid in beds and lightly sprinkled with earth. As soon as new shoots appear on them, layering spuds. In autumn, they need to be separated from the main bush.

The most common and easiest way to propagate jasmine is dividing the bush. To do this, it is necessary to dig out the root system and carefully divide so as not to injure the plant. Plant the resulting parts in several places on the site.

In order for jasmine to decorate the garden plot and delight with abundant flowering, you need to follow a few care rules:

  1. Every week, loosen the soil around the shrub and remove weeds.
  2. Use mineral and organic fertilizers.
  3. Regularly engage in the formation of a bush, give it the correct shape by pinching the tops.

Watering

Jasmine needs abundant watering, especially during dry times.

Do not allow the soil to dry out! If jasmine lacks moisture, its leaves lose turgor and turn yellow.

For 1 sq.m. soil around the shrub will need about 30 liters of water.

top dressing

The first feeding can be done only a year after planting. This shrub will need organic and mineral fertilizers.

To prepare a mineral fertilizer, mix 30 g of superphosphate and 15 g of potassium sulfide and urea in 1 bucket of water. This amount is enough to feed 1-2 bushes.

As an organic fertilizer, you can use slurry, which is diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10.

Preparing for winter

Jasmine is not afraid of low temperatures, so he does not need additional preparation for winter. But if the plant is not one year old, it must be covered with light material and tied with a rope.

pruning

In order for the plant to have a neat appearance, it must be constantly cut. Cosmetic and sanitary pruning is performed annually.

Gardeners thin out bushes, remove dried flowers and extra shoots.

It is also important not to forget about anti-aging pruning. In the spring, 4-5 trunks are cut to 0.5 m, the rest of the shoots are removed to the ground.

To prevent fungal diseases, the places of saw cuts are treated with garden pitch.

One of the most beautiful garden plants is the Jasmine shrub. During the flowering period, it is framed by a white cap of small flowers, and with proper pruning, the bush has a wonderful shape. Caring for jasmine does not require much effort, as it is quite unpretentious.

Shrub jasmine - description, birthplace of the plant

Shrub jasmine is an evergreen plant that has beautiful regular-shaped flowers at the ends of the branches. It is they who exude a strong pleasant aroma from the bush, which can even lead to a headache in a limited space. The stem is thin and smooth, forming many green pinnate leaves.

The plant is native to the southern countries of Western Europe. It grows well in Turkey, Georgia, Israel, Azerbaijan, Syria. Some gardeners confuse shrub jasmine with mock orange, but these are different plants with different colors from each other. Mock orange flowers are most often 4-leaved, have a pronounced bunch of stamens. In jasmine, they are smoother, flatter, with a slightly inverted core.

Landing in open ground

Planting jasmine should serve specific purposes. The gardener needs to decide in advance where the bush will grow. It can be located in the form of a hedge, near the gazebo or just on the lawn.

The choice of location must be approached responsibly.

  • The soil for the bush needs moist, with good drainage.
  • The plant needs at least 4 hours of sunlight per day, so it will grow well on the south side. If the shrub is often in the shade, this affects the beauty of its flowers.
  • Other plants should not be placed around the circumference of the crown of the bush (at least 3 meters in diameter), as they can interfere with the development of the rhizome and crown.
  • If a hedge is expected, jasmine is recommended to be planted at a distance of half a meter from each other.

Landing site preparation:

  1. Dig a hole no more than 70 cm deep and about 50-60 cm wide.
  2. Pour a drainage layer of no more than 20 cm at the bottom, which includes sand and gravel.
  3. Warm the hole thoroughly in the sun for several days.

Shrub jasmine should be planted in spring or autumn. After planting in the ground, it will need to be covered with a substrate, which includes peat, humus, black soil, ash and sand.

shrub care

Looking at jasmine flowers, you can immediately judge the quality of care for him. It is very important to properly fertilize and water the shrub.

Top dressing is carried out in the spring, when the bush begins to grow intensively.

The advantage should be given to mineral fertilizers.

Fertilizer liquid per bush:

  • 5 liters of water;
  • 15 gr. superphosphate;
  • 7 gr. urea;
  • 7 gr. potassium sulfide.

The plant can also be fertilized with manure diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10. This liquid is recommended to insist a couple of days before use. Shrubs also respond well to fertilizing with ash from a fire.

Caring for jasmine during the flowering period involves regular watering.

pruning

Jasmine pruning will need to be done annually in the spring. This will help improve the appearance of the shrub, rejuvenate it, significantly extend the flowering period and even increase the number of future flowers. After pruning, it is important to treat all cuts with a garden pitch - this will preserve the appearance of the jasmine.

Basic pruning rules:

  • it is necessary to carry out all work on the correction of the bush before the appearance of the first spring buds;
  • when "cutting" it is recommended to maintain a certain height of jasmine, which should not exceed more than 2 meters;
  • the first pruning of the shrub is carried out 3 years after planting in permanent soil;
  • it is recommended to remove all lower processes that do not look up, but to the side.

7-8 years after planting, jasmine needs rejuvenation. It is carried out over 3 years.

  • In the first spring, only strong trunks up to 50 cm high are left, and the rest are removed to the roots.
  • The following year, 1/3 of the trunks left last year are cut off.
  • In the third spring, the old trunks are completely removed.

All sections must be covered with garden pitch.

How to take care in winter?

The last feeding of jasmine bushes is carried out in early autumn. Fertilizer should be applied to the soil a few weeks before frost, so in cold climates this should be taken into account.

Then you will need to remove all fallen flowers and leaves from the ground, thereby completely clearing the top of the soil. In warm countries, sheltering a bush for the winter is not carried out, as it is adapted for wintering. But if the temperature drops to severe frosts, it is better to cover the plant.

How to do it:

  • lightly dig the soil around the bush, remove all weeds;
  • sprinkle the substrate with a layer of mulch (for example, dry needles or stale manure).

It should also be remembered that only young shrubs under the age of 3 years will need to be covered for the winter.

Propagation Methods for Jasmine Shrub

Jasmine can be propagated in several ways - by seeds, cuttings, layering, and even by dividing the root system. The most time-consuming is the cultivation of shrubs from seeds, and the easiest and fastest is the division of the rhizome.

How to propagate Jasmine:

cuttings

It is necessary to cut the cuttings in mid-June. This is best done with a sharp knife. Green shoots that have part of the old branch on them take root most successfully. The cutting itself should have a length of 5 cm and 2 pairs of leaves.

  • For cuttings, it is necessary to prepare moist and loose soil mixed with sand.
  • The cutting is placed in the ground, which needs to be slightly trampled.
  • From above, the jasmine is covered with a greenhouse. It must be regularly removed for airing and spraying the future bush.
  • Such a cutting will be ready for planting on permanent soil by October.

layering

The most successful time for such reproduction is mid-spring (April or early May).

  • You will need to choose one of the extreme shoots and press it to the ground.
  • In the place where the stem will touch the soil, remove the bark by 1 cm.
  • Using a wire, screw the shoot to the support and sprinkle the part of the trunk without bark with the substrate.
  • Throughout the season, you will need to regularly check the condition of the layers and, if necessary, add soil or mulch.
  • The soil needs to be watered periodically.

At the end of summer, the rooted shoot can already be separated from the bush and planted in a permanent place.

Shrub division

This method is recommended in cases where the bush is very large and has grown strongly around the perimeter. It must be dug up and divided into several equal parts (about 2-3), on which their own part of the root system will remain.

After this procedure, you will need to immediately land the resulting bushes at a permanent place of residence. The optimal time for dividing the bush is early spring or late autumn.

Protection against diseases and pests

Shrub jasmine is susceptible to many diseases.

Also dangerous are:

  • scab;
  • mealybug;
  • spider mite;
  • whitefly and other harmful insects.

To cure the plant, you will need to remove all affected areas, and then carefully treat the bush with an insecticide.

How to grow a plant in Siberia?

The main rule for growing this shrub in Siberia is the correct selection of its variety. You should choose the jasmine flower that has maximum frost resistance without the need for shelter for the winter.

The height of the crown for wintering will need to be cut to the level of the future snow cover. If this is not possible, the height of the snow level can be increased by throwing it near the bush. Young seedlings in a cool climate are best planted no earlier than August, but no later than September.

Shrub Jasmine is unpretentious and demanding at the same time. But subject to a few rules of care, you can get a wonderful decoration for any landscape design.
